Larry Cohen got his start in blaxploitation films, directing two Fred Williamson movies, "Black Caesar" and "Hell Up in Harlem," before moving to sardonic, b-movie horror. "The Stuff" is more clever than you'd expect, even if it's execution is a bit sloppy. Americans are obsessed with a desert snack with addictive properties, called, yup, the stuff. A kid and two adults find out the awful truth. It mixes horror with social satire, which may be why it didn't really click with audiences or critics. Cohen also directed "Q: The Winged Serpent" and "It's Alive." If I were programming an 80s cult horror film festival, I'd include this with "C.H.U.D.," "Day of the Dead," and "They Live."
