"A richly textured and timeless novel of suspense. Her Victorian England pulsates with life and is peopled with wonderfully memorable characters." Faye Kellerman Although esteemed General Thaddeus Carlyon meets his death in a freak accident at home, his beautiful wife, Alexandra, confesses that she killed him. Investigator William Monk, nurse Hester Latterly, and the brilliant Oliver Rathbone, counsel for the defense, work feverishly to break down the wall of silence raised by the accused and her husband's proud family. A rich society matron admits to murdering her husband, which means she will hang. The husband's sister, a friend of Hester's, doesn't believe the wife was capable of doing it, so goes to Hester for help. She brings in Monk and Rathbone in this 3rd outing in the series. The wife refuses to talk, so the three must work on their own to find out if she really did kill him, and if she did, why. I won't give anything away here, but the trial, with Oliver Rathbone for the defense, is absolutely incredible and had me in tears. As someone else said, it's very dark, but also hopeful.

I wish there were more stars for this one. Five simply isn't enough.

Compelling, hard to put down, but very, very dark.
