When teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby, one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.

The movie was to jumpy and reminded me too much of the X-men. Was this suppose to be the very start of the X-men or was it just a failed copy. In the movie you have different powers which of course the president Gray son has powers of Orange. Does that not seem familiar? Then of course you need a good one with powers. Seems very similar to magneto and Professor X. You also have different wars where you have the mutants battling each other plus the humans and in this one you have very similar things as well. I cannot believe how many times I had flash backs of the X-men while watching this movie. Now comparing it with X-men there was no contest. X-men series did a far better job at being entertaining.

The story is completely recycled from numerous other YA titles, so you often feel like "wait.....haven't I seen this before?" Nothing original here. Good acting from the young cast, and some bigger names make small appearances, however the story just sorta limps along and appears to merely be a set-up for a franchise of sequals.

The movie held my attention and had a compelling third act. I didn't feel the tension and suspense in the story-line compared to Divergent, Hunger Games or Maze Runner and think it felt weak compared to these past movies. However, it was still a fun watch.

This movie was entertaining but nothing exceptional. Kept our interest and best of all I did not fall asleep. An an average movie so I game it a three even though it looks like a 3.3.

This film took a very popular YA post-apocalyptic series and decided to flip the script and remake the characters. The thought being that there were too many post apocalyptic YA films out there with the same looking protagonists. The end result was an attempt at diversity which alienated fans of the book series. The lead is miscast although brilliant in other roles she just isn’t given much to work with here. Most of the novels are set as inner mental battles of morality for the protagonist to struggle with here that sense of moral struggle is completely lost. The movie becomes X-men rejects episode whatever. Complete waste of good talent and source material.

Good CGI but another movie that mainly took great scenes from really good movies and strung them together to sort of fit the plot. Okay for young teens but a bit of a let down for adults.

Great acting and CGI, marred only by an awkward script and some cliches. I honestly enjoyed it better than the book.

The series this movie is based on is by far one of my favorites. They are the books I go back to when I just need something good to read and nothing new is hitting the spot.
But this movie? Wow, it was painful to sit through. Everything was so incredibly rushed, there is no way anyone who didn't read the books could actually follow along.
This movie also fell prey to the worst book-to-movie sin. Change things for no real apparent reason. I didn't have any issues with the cast (Amandla is fantastic as Ruby, and Chubs was amazing) or the acting (for the most part). But the execution? Oh boy.
If you're coming at this movie as someone who read the books, do not ruin it by watching this movie.
If you stumbled across this and think the story sounds interesting, skip the movie and read the book.

I've been a fan of The Darkest Minds trilogy for a long time, so when I heard they were adapting the first book into a movie? I knew I had to watch it. Like many fans, I was fairly sceptical if the movie would live up to the book. I mean, Chubs being a green? Gold not yellow? Where was Liam's southern accent! For me this movie was 5 stars. Ruby Daly (Amandla Steinburg) is nowhere near a perfect heroine. She's a teenager who has spent more time in rehabilitation camps than out of them. She's bound to make some dumb decisions. She's grown up knowing that she was unwanted and isolated from the outside. Liam (Harris Dickinson) is the Betty crew's strong leader who you can't help but love. His character just seemed so real, and the chemistry between him and Ruby was tear jerking. You can't forget the loyal Chubs, who has a way of breaking the ice and putting a smile on you're face throughout the whole film. Though I love this movie, it's clear that its target audience is teens who can see themselves in these beloved characters. 5 Stars
