Fred Rogers (1928-2003) was an enormously influential figure in the history of television and in the lives of tens of millions of children. As the creator and star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood , he was a champion of compassion, equality, and kindness. Rogers was fiercely devoted to children and to taking their fears, concerns, and questions about the world seriously.

The Good Neighbor, the first full-length biography of Fred Rogers, tells the story of this utterly unique and enduring American icon. Drawing on original interviews, oral histories, and archival documents, Maxwell King traces Rogers's personal, professional, and artistic life through decades of work, including a surprising decision to walk away from the show to make television for adults, only to return to the neighborhood with increasingly sophisticated episodes, written in collaboration with experts on childhood development. An engaging story, rich in detail, The Good N eighbor is the definitive portrait of a beloved figure, cherished by multiple generations.

An interesting look at a childhood icon. I was fascinated to learn more about his activism and his undying passion for his work with children. I would absolutely recommend!

Overall a fascinating account of a childhood icon for many of us. It's read by LeVar Burton (of course!).

Reading this book was a balm for my heart. If you're looking for a read about a good person trying his best to do good for his community, this is a very satisfying story. And the audio version read by LeVar Burton is an extra delight!

I'll be honest. I'm biased when it comes to anything Mister Rogers. Not only did I grow up watching, but my son has been watching reruns for the last several years. And I don't speak lightly when I say that Mister Rogers has changed our lives. You can find an episode for almost every single childhood fear. He has got us through shots, riding an airplane, haircuts, etc. While I enjoyed the documentary that came out earlier this year ("Won't You Be My Neighbor"), I was eager for the deep dive this book provided. Even if you aren't already a fan, this is a fascinating look at unique person and worldview that we could all use a little more of in our lives.

Without a doubt, Fred Rogers is an icon in the worlds of both children's television and child development. It was his passion to always do what is best for the children that really shines through in this comprehensive biography. Having seen the documentary that was released this year before reading the book was helpful to me in establishing a framework for processing information in this book. Many might find the documentary to be more helpful as this bio runs a bit on the long side and tends to be repetitious.

"I wonder what age is it that Fred no longer likes you just the way you are?"
Leland Hazard to a colleague after a contentious meeting with Mr. Rogers.
