"Deeply shaken after a brutal attack, Bailey Carpenter struggles to reclaim control over what had once seemed like a neatly-ordered life. Unable to face her job, her friends, or even the world outside her apartment, Bailey is trapped with her thoughts, replaying the attack in a desperate search for a detail that will help the police uncover the identity of her unknown assailant. Bailey sees her attacker in the face of every stranger, and is unable to trust anyone other than her half-sister, Claire, and Claire's snarky teenage daughter Jade. To pass the time in her lonely apartment, Bailey plays with the binoculars she once used in her career as a private investigator, scanning the high-rise buildings around hers for entertainment. She quickly discovers a favorite source: a handsome, wealthy playboy in the apartment across the street. But she watches him strut around his bedroom, she starts to wonder if he's putting on a show - with her as his intended audience. Looking out the window late one night, she sees him looking tauntingly right back at her, binoculars in hand. Could it be the assailant she's been so desperate to identify has been right there, watching her, the whole time? The police, exasperated after Bailey's many paranoid false alarms, believe she's crying wolf, and Claire tries to convince her she's wrong. Doubting her own sanity, Bailey has only Jade left to turn to, and together the two hatch a dangerous plot to discover just what exactly is going on in the apartment across the way"-- Provided by publisher.

Another great book by Joy Fielding. Keeps you on your toes right to the end. You would never imagine the evil person in this novel. It takes all kind and what some people will do to get what they want in life.

Good book Bailey Carpenter is a investigator. She is attacked and nearly killed when she was spying on a tip of a dead beat dad. She is uinable to stop the nightmares and find it hard to venture out without panicking. She started spying from her window on the guy across the street. Is it possible he is the one the attacked her.

I don't mean to be rude BUT I stopped reading Joy Fielding's novels years ago
after I heard her speak, in person, and could discern the utter lack of any intelligence.

Initially it rang true as a real who-done-it. However, as the pages turned slowly, there seemed to be no end to the hysterics of the protagonist.

Reading the first two thirds of this book was like slogging through snow up to your knees: tiring and tedious. Okay, we get it! The heroine was raped and totally traumatized.
Somehow, however, it just didn't ring true. This was a capable, trained investigator, and she totally fell apart after the event?
Thankfully, the book somewhat redeemed itself towards the end...when something actually happened!

This was another good book by Joy Fielding. The ending was unexpected.

At 369 pages, this book was 300 pages too long. Lots of repetition, unlikeable characters, and unbelievable scenarios. Rather than torture myself unnecessarily, after reading a third of the book I checked the end to find out 'whodunit', and that was the end of my relationship with this book. Very disappointing.

Tedious. Too long. Profanity from young girl. Skipped to ending to avoid more duplication of main character's
"thoughts". Surprise ending.

Good, and I think, realistic book about the consequences of rape. Bailey Carpenter, raped while on the job as an investigator, struggles with sleeping, feeling clean and being around men. Slowly, however she begins to recover as she tries to take more control of her life and of the investigation. I also like the reactions of those around her, heartfelt sympathy, the patience of the police, the help of her therapist. No tells her to "snap out of it". But who could it be? A former boyfriend, a stranger, someone she has investigated, the man in the apt across the street, and what's the connection with a pending lawsuit involving an inheritance? As Bailey gets back to living her life, she finds out who her real supporters are.
