"Having left the Faroes as a child, Jan Reyna is now a British police detective, and the islands are foreign to him. But he is drawn back when his estranged father is found unconscious with a shotgun by his side and someone else's blood at the scene. Then a man's body is washed up on an isolated beach. Is Reyna's father responsible? Looking for answers, Reyna falls in with local detective Hjalti Hentze. But as the stakes get higher and Reyna learns more about his family and the truth behind his mother's flight from the Faroes, he must decide whether to stay, or to forsake the strange, windswept islands for good."--Provided by publisher.

An interesting murder-mystery story set in the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands are in the north Atlantic between Norway and Iceland—an “autonomous country within the kingdom of Denmark.” A man is found unconscious in his car with blood in the interior of the car, and a big, stash of cash in the trunk. The Faroese police investigate. His son, who is a policeman in England, comes to visit. The family relationship is complex and confused—the English policeman was taken from the Islands by his mother when he was very young. He does not really know why she left her husband. The father has a thriving, successful business which is operated by his other sons still living on the Islands. So, the English cop is the odd man out in a tight-knit community. He gets friendly with a local police officer and starts to help when his father’s situation is linked to other bodies being found among the small population. The writing was a bit odd, because it had different people speaking in the first person (takes a few lines to figure out who is talking) but the setting is unique and the story interesting. SPL has the first two books (book 3 is On Order) in the Faroyar Trilogy (1-The Blood Strand, 2-The Killing Bay, 3-The Fire Pit).

The crux of it all ... money, even in the Faroe Islands. No matter how isolated and insular the society, settling debts is not optional. Scheming begins and the ground one stands on becomes a very slippery slope. Collateral damage spreads. The Blood Strand ... a modest, readable tale.

Really enjoyed this. It's not a flashy thriller but rather an intricate, thoughtful police procedural that introduces 2 intriguing MC's.
The setting provides an atmospheric backdrop that adds to the slowly rising tension as the case progresses & old family secrets are revealed for one of the detectives.
For fans of Ann Cleeves "Shetland" & Peter May's "Blackhouse" series. I'll definitely be looking for book #2.

Very new & sounds interesting, so if it's successful with lots of requests...maybe an ebook will come to SPL for people who are unable to read tiny tiny print.
