The pleasant surprise is that the book is surprisingly well written. Porizkova is a genuinely excellent writer of fiction. She has a sophisticated writing style that makes me surprised she has not continued to publish.
This is a stark, vulgar, and often upsetting account of a young girl’s introduction to the modeling industry, based off Porizkova’s experiences as a young model. The book could have been called “A Series of Unfortunate Events” because the plot is basically Jirina facing a frustrating string of disasters and humiliations; it’s a stressful read, but with a vaguely optimistic ending. Definitely worth a read for anyone interested in modeling.
As a side note, I don’t know why the subject headings list 1944-1945 as this takes place in the eighties.
