Highly recommend this film. It is based on a true story of a girl born in South Africa who looks black but is born to white parents during the time of apartheid. Her parents had Afrikaner heritage and carried black genes. It is an incredible story of how everyone copes with the circumstances. This film is very well done and conveys the horror of growing up in a divided society.

A true story happened in South Africa. A girl Sandra Laing was born with visibly dark skin to her Afrikaner parents who looked white. Sandra was legally white, but she still had a hard time in life and had to face racial intolerance.

Parents without much melanin in their skin can have a child with melanin-rich skin, if the bit of code is in their heritage and there is the correct combination.

The same goes the other way, I should think. The child is yours, raise it as such and be proud either way. Grateful for DNA testing.

a Very good movie, horrifying some of the things that happened. Great acting by all and a good outcome, in many ways.

The film was very well done. Heartbreaking story of families broken apart during the apartheid era. The portrayal of the father's denial was very well written. There are so few stories about mixed families during that era in history.

A compelling true story. A black child is born to white parents(atavism) in apartheid era South Africa. He fights the courts to have her classified as white and eventually wins - at costs to family life. Estranged by white society the daughter lives with the blacks but now wants to be reclassified as black creating it's own set of problems.
The movie creates a lot of empathy for the girl whereas the father becomes obsessed with her "whiteness" and destroys the family.

This is an interesting view of personal and racial politics in South Africa based on the true story of a daughter born to white africaners with black genes. This is really worth watching.
