Retired to the English countryside, an eighty-nine-year-old man, rumored to be a once-famous detective, is more concerned with his beekeeping than with his fellow man. Into his life wanders Linus Steinman, nine years old and mute, who has escaped from Nazi Germany with his sole companion: an African gray parrot.

What is the meaning of the mysterious strings of German numbers the bird spews out-a top-secret SS code? The keys to a series of Swiss bank accounts? Or do they hold a significance both more prosaic and far more sinister?

Though the solution may be beyond even the reach of the once-famous sleuth, the true story of the boy and his parrot is subtly revealed in a wrenching resolution.

Although not classed as a children's book, I think it ought to be. It was entertaining and fresh and playful with its use of language, the humour created with exaggeration and sarcasm. It was delightful and I will be (eventually) reading more from Chabon. The book was narrated masterfully by York (famous for playing Tybalt in Zeffirelli's version of Romeo and Juliet), giving each character their own voice and altering the intonation to indicate slyness, subdued smart-alec-ness, and the sarcasm mentioned above.

This is an excellent little detective story. What is not to love about 1) An old man who keeps bees yet has an innate knowledge of people and their motivations. 2) The love between a boy and his pet - his unique pet. 3) An espionage, WWII, secret code, mystery. All this is wrapped in a short, fast-paced little gem.
Michael York is an excellent reader of this if you get the audio version.
