The beloved actor and screenwriter's first novel, set during World War I, delicately and elegantly explores a most unusual romance.  It's almost the end of the war and Paul Peachy, a young railway employee and amateur actor in Milwaukee, realizes his marriage is one-sided.  He enlists, and ships off to France.  Peachy instantly realizes how out of his depth he is - and never more so than when he is captured.  Risking everything, Peachy - who as a child of immigrants speaksGerman - makes the reckless decision to impersonate one of the enemy's most famous spies. As the urbane and accomplished spy Harry Stroller, Peachy has access to a world he could never have known existed - a world of sumptuous living, world-weary men, and available women.  But when one of those women - Annie, a young, beautiful and wary courtesan - turns out to be more than she seems, Peachy's life is transformed forever.

My French Whore by Gene Wilder is a whirlwind of a book for anyone who loves period timepieces with a hint of a good romance! The title at first can be very…. bold. But once you start you will not stop, it begins with a character named peachy who escapes a bad marriage by looking for an adventure and ends up joining the war and any adventure that peachy wants he gets. A lot of it. It’s a short book I must admit but Wilder's writing is economical and intertwines easter egg homages to the great Hemingway with little bits and bobs of silly comedy and errors that makes the essence of the book come alive. The story overall is charming with chapters of such a poignant emotion it will surprise you! Lots and lots of poignant emotions. With a comical, love, emotional essence of the book I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful/love/period timepiece story! Sitting on the edge of my seat wondering if peachy's cover was going to be blown was the highlight of reading it! I more than recommend anyone to read this book! Absolutely a fun read! I really enjoyed this read. Yes, it is short. I finished it in a morning. Wilder turns out to be very economical with his writing, and one will notice he pays homage to Hemingway in his notes. The story is charming and determinedly a comedy of errors or mistaken identity. Solid novel.

Short but satisfying read--don't be put off by the title. Starts off a mildly silly comedy or errors, with the suspense of wondering if Peachy's cover will be blown, but in those last few chapters it surprises you with its poignant emotion. I read it in one sitting.
