I have mixed feelings about this book. Premise was was great about the first woman Pinkerton detective. But I found the protagonist tiresome. No matter how many times she's told not to say "Aunt Kitty" because of danger, she goes right ahead and does it anyway. She's lucky her aunt doesn't plunk her in that orphanage for endangering the detectives time and again. I fear the writing was just not that great.

I quite liked the book. It was very well researched . I quite liked the characters, and the ending was a very good sum up. but I just didn't feel such a big connection. Some books I reads seem to suck me in, but not this one. Still it was a very good book. totally recommend it to anyone.

An awesome, well-researched historical fiction account of the Pinkerton agency and its detectives as told through the (fictional) eyes of Nell Warne. I loved the story, and appreciated it even more when I learned it was based on the true life account of Kate Warne, detective.

Historical fiction based on America's first female detective, Kate Warne, who worked for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Believable (and sassy) characters, with dialogue and setting well-matched to the time.
